The one thing that is the same in every book is that people are always talking about introducing someone new to something. Here’s the thing about this: we don’t know what to say. We say, “Introduce yourself.” But we don’t know what to say.
Theres a lot of different ways to introduce yourself. One way to introduce yourself (for example) is to have someone say something to you that seems to be interesting. Another way is to have someone say something to you that you might or might not find interesting, or maybe you dont want to hear.
I think the “introduce yourself” is the hardest one to get right. It has to be something that you will want to hear, something that you have a right to know. Which is why I feel like introducing myself to someone new should be an opportunity to show them something they dont know, and you cant show them something you dont know.
Its not that hard to introduce yourself to a new person. You just have to be sure you have the right words. As a general rule, you want to say something like, “Hi, I’m a fan of your game” or “I’m a programmer”, since those are the two most important things you can say about yourself in the first few sentences.
I’ve been known to say something like “A game I worked on called ‘The Long Run’ was just over a decade old. I think maybe I’m going to be making a game about me.” Or something like that.
People often underestimate how much they can say in the first few sentences. That said, if they don’t have something to say, then they usually don’t say anything at all. So what does someone say in the first few sentences you ask them to describe their game? I know some people ask me for advice.
One of the more frustrating things I’ve been doing lately is that I can’t seem to get the last few sentences to focus on the last word. When I was doing my first game I started by saying some stuff. What we had was a map in the game, where you could move around the map and you could see the areas that you’re interested in, so I was trying to make sense of the first few sentences of the game.
